Suburban Design seminar: Future of post-war neighbourhoods

HELSINKI (FI) - Suburbs and shopping centres are part of everyday life in Europe. About 80% of urban residents live in suburbs. After World War II, lack of housing was remedied by building new, often monotonous, residential areas at a record-breaking speed. Now these areas have to meet the residents' changing needs.

The Suburban Design seminar is a multi-professional planning seminar from 12–14 September 2012 in the World Design Capital Helsinki. It focuses on the revitalization and development of suburbs in three cities:

  • Espoo: Garden city Tapiola in the new urban nucleus
  • Helsinki: Renewal of neighbourhoods with citizens
  • Vantaa: Suburban centres as living spaces

The programme consists of excursions in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, Finnish and international lecturers and case studies, workshops and discussions. The seminar will be held in English.

The seminar is for urban planners, architects and everyone interested in suburban design. Get the early bird price by registering no later than Monday, 20 August 2012. The early bird price is €300, and the full price is €350. The student discount fee is €50. The price includes the entire three-day seminar programme with excursions, meals and a public transportation ticket. Registration >

Suburban Design seminar is a part of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 programme. The seminar is organized by the cities of Vantaa, Helsinki and Espoo, the Finnish Association of Architects SAFA, the Association of Finnish Construction Engineers and Architects RIA, the Finnish Association of Planning Engineers SKI, the Finnish Association of Landscape Architects MARK, the Association of Finnish Planning Geographers SUM, the European New Towns Platform ENTP and Aalto University.
