LEIPZIG (DE) - Take a memento, transform the structure…

Interior architect Johannes Albert and book designer Helmut Stabe designed and realized a playful concept for a trade fair stand at the 2010 Leipzig Book Fair. Mitteldeutscher Verlag presented its publications this year on a construction of 15,000 pencils and eight perforated boards, which together formed a three-dimensional grid of surface and void. Where pencils were absent from the pattern, the spaces created became shelves onto which books could be placed. Pencils were also strategically positioned within the constraints of the grid in order to shape the publisher's name. The simple and versatile writing tool performed a structural function as well, with 315 pencils used to fasten the perforated boards in position.

Without glue to hold them in place, the thousands of pencils offer almost endless possibilities – they can be rearranged to present the books in any number of ways, or simply picked out and pocketed by visitors who desire a keepsake, in one moment fundamentally altering the present and future structure of the stand. Even the publisher's name could be modified, abbreviated or rendered completely different by an intrepid mischief-maker. This trade fair stand toys with the notion of the pencil as a generic giveaway item and contrasts it with that of a humble writing implement that contains the potential to produce great literary works. The concept is therefore amusing not only for its self-referential qualities, but also for its flexible and ultimately transient nature.
