NOVI SAD (RS) - Origami forum is a multifunctional furniture object for sitting, hanging out, resting, lying… In fact the word 'furniture' is not even that appropriate. This is not just a beautiful sculptural object; the design team of ModelArt conceived it as an actual 'forum', a place where people can meet, chat, socialize and exchange ideas.
The installation, measuring 4.5×1.6×1 metres is intended to be used both outdoors and indoors, and is made up of modular triangular plywood elements. These elements are connected with rope to form a structure that resembles the Japanese art of paper folding. Underneath is a wooden support construction.
The advantage of such origami structures is that they feature relatively small elements which are simple (and cheap) to produce and easy to transport, while their multiplication can result in an endless variety of dynamic compositions.
But so far, this sculptural object is a singular piece. The project was made at the Faculty of Technical Science, within the department of architecture and urban planning in Novi Sad. Architects/students Dejan Mitov, Jelena Čobanović, Krsto Radovanović and Maja Nogavica manually crafted all 500 triangular elements themselves, without using any kind of digital cutting. Several prototypes were produced before arriving at the final origami forum.
After being exhibited (and used) at the Faculty in Novi Sad, the installation is now located in Belgrade, in the Museum of Applied Art, where it was exhibited at the 33rd Salon of Architecture. Until now there have been no plans to implement the installation into any project – the architects did not design it for a specific client. However, 'if somebody is interested we would welcome any kind of cooperation,' says ModelArt.
