KLAGENFURT (AT) - The biggest advantage of the new provincial hospital in Klagenfurt is space. On a site area of twelve hectares, it accommodates in many ways an innovative clinical centre, and its architectural concept is a key aspect of the definition of a modern hospital.

The palmate footprint of the only two-storey building by project leader Dietmar Feichtinger Architects fits well in the landscape and carefully forms more private areas for users. All areas have a strong visual reference to the green space, which also provides easy orientation within the complex with its specially characterized gardens.

The structure of the main hospital building allows simple routing and good guidance from two development areas: an outpatient treatment corridor and a visitor path that together act as a functional backbone. A light pedestrian bridge connects this main building with the supply centre, which is also located between two corridors with inner courtyards. The open, glazed facade of the entrance zone to the clinical centre is mirrored by the facade of the cafeteria in the supply centre. The 'fingers' primarily house the patient wards, which are organised in a traditional central corridor circulation system with central service stations.

The horizontal, elegant structure of the clinical centre, along with the bright spacious rooms, give the building much more of a 'hotel character' than the feeling of a hospital. The dark colour of the metal skin, together with the yellow window awnings, introduce rhythm in the facade. Because of the low building height a high level of sunlight reaches deep into rooms, thus creating optimum working conditions for the employees, as well as accelerating the recovery process of the patients.
