Archetypal dental practice

BEST (NL) - While previously dental clinics were usually housed in uninspiring basements or back rooms, in recent years there has been an increased amount of attention given to the accommodations of this particular profession. Many dentists try to create a pleasant, relaxing environment where they can offer their patients more than the purely necessary fillings. These days, this more often shifts the task from an interior refitting, such as the hip KU64 practice in Berlin, to a full building contract. The recently completed Mondzorg Best (Best Dental Care) project is a good example. The practice is located in the centre of Best, a municipality in Brabant, located in the south of the Netherlands just above Eindhoven. Here the Rotterdam-based office Shift A+U designed an extension to a 1930s brick residence. The agency is also known for the award-winning Faculty Club in Tilburg.

The challenge in Best was to transform this small-scale '30s villa into a contemporary dental practice of almost 300 square metres. The architects deliberately ensured that the extension would not be situated directly against the original house. In this regard, they designed a semi-detached building volume with the exact same roof pitch as the house itself. Owing to the fact that the new volume is completely clad in zinc, the expansion separates itself from the brick structure, acquiring both a contemporary look and a recognizable archetypal form.

A waiting room for patients and several personnel rooms are located in the ground floor reception area of the former residence. The four new treatment rooms are located in the new structure behind the house, arranged in a straight line. On one side of the villa is an entirely glass corridor, where an orange-coloured wall with built-in closets forms the separation between the existing house and the four almost identical rooms. The rooms each have a generous horizontal window with wide sill overlooking the peaceful rear garden. Having a similar appeal to the aforementioned project in Berlin, it is almost tempting to make an appointment with this dental clinic in Best some time, just for fun.
