PARIS (FR) - Earlier this year, in the shadow of the Montmartre hill in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, ECDM architectes completed a fresh, light children's day-care centre. The small-scale building with an undulating facade in rue Pierre Budin is made of prefabricated white concrete panels. The architectural firm of Dominique and Emmanuel Combarel Marrec experiments more often with special facade materials, and is particularly known for its photogenic building for the RATP (Paris public transport company) in Thiais (see A10 #20), which was designed in 2007.

Also in the 18th arrondissement, in rue Pierre Picard, another French architect, BP architectures, realized an equally compact, playful day-care centre in 2010. Both crèches were built by commission from the municipality of Paris and came about after a closed competition.

The construction by ECDM comprises a total of three storeys. The day-care centre itself takes the bottom two layers, which wrap around a private courtyard space, and a separate company residence is located above. The latter, in contrast to the rest of the building, has a flat, darker facade. Consciously, the architects have in this way given this space its own character, one which seeks to lend the private environment of the future owner a completely different identity than that of his/her daily work environment.

This new construction is another fine example added to the growing list of architectonically interesting day-care centres. As Jure Kotnik has already written in his article 'Kindergarten Renaissance' (see A10 #39), this building type is increasingly designed with a strong conceptual and architectural approach, while previously the problem was usually solved in a purely functional manner. With that, the crèche has now in an architectural sense also come into adulthood.
