LØGTEN (DK) - In this small town a short distance north of Aarhus the transformation of a former industrial silo is complete. Addressing a common problem wherein old silos dominate the local skylines of suburban areas in Denmark, despite that many are no longer in use, this conversion demonstrates once more that disused complexes such as these can be given new life as high-density, free-standing housing.
The formerly redundant tower in this case now consists of individual 'stacked villas', a composition of single-storey flats and maisonettes in which no single unit is exactly the same. Thanks to C.F. Møller Architects, in collaboration with Christian Carlsen Arkitektfirma, each apartment in the new building receives sunlight throughout the day and benefits from outdoor spaces, such as a balcony or terrace. With the actual silo tower remaining as a central core – containing staircases, lifts and, at its apex, a common rooftop terrace for occupants – housing units are wrapped around it, stacked upon a steel structure in such a way as to produce visually interesting orthogonal protrusions and large, light-giving openings.
Added to this effect are the colourful hues that call attention to the displaced volumes in the building's facade. Visible from the outside, the bright insertions compliment and enhance an otherwise stark white and grey exterior, perhaps as a reminder of the infusion of new life at a location that yet retains its dialogue with the past. In describing the conversion, the architects state that 'the body of the silo is deliberately left visible on the side of the building facing the new centre, to ensure a continued legibility of the history of the site, and to acknowledge that these types of structures have an equal validity as rural historical markers.'
Further, a mixed-use, 'village centre'-style complex has been envisioned at the base of the structure, including shops, a supermarket and a public green space and park with small allotments for residents.
