Lines of light

SURGUT (RU) - The urban character of the Russian oil city of Surgut is like a Siberian winter. Into these sombre surroundings, Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat has inserted a beacon of light with his trade and entertainment centre. The eight-storey complex offers round-the-clock diversion for people of all ages. Its 35,000 square metres host shops, sports facilities, dance studios, restaurants, bars and an underground nightclub. The complex is organized around a full-height atrium.

The sharp-edged, metal-clad volume is slashed by 'primary cuts' filled with glass and by narrower 'secondary cuts' consisting of lines of light, which transform the building's appearance after nightfall. The light lines act like the misleading dazzle painting deployed during World War I to camouflage ships and make them less obvious targets for torpedoes. (Kim Hoefnagels)
