THESSALONIKI (GR) - London-based Andy Martin Studio created a serene black environment for 'Chan', a pan-Asian restaurant at The Met hotel in the northern Greek coastal city of Thessaloniki. Discreet entrances from the street and from inside the hotel screen the space from daylight, ensuring that the graphic light concept is the focus of attention.

The bar and the wall panels are inset with an abstract light pattern inspired by bamboo, while the backlit patterns on the ceiling were inspired by Japanese gardens, where the sand is raked to create the impression of rippled water. Here a similar effect is created by LED lights, not just by way of the self-repeating graphic pattern, but also in a spatial sense through its reflection on the smooth black tabletops, whereby the light is subtly diffused through the restaurant space.

Andy Martin says he felt that 'to create a truly contemporary Asian restaurant space, one must look at the dynamic atmospheres of Asian cities at night and combine traditional iconic graphics and craft.' (Kim Hoefnagels)
