Urban refuge
Leather, grass and golden tiles
MADRID (ES) - Despite its diminutive size and central city location, this 70 m2 penthouse in downtown Madrid aspires to be an urban refuge. It meets its owners' every wish for their ideal home: a shower with a view, an open-plan kitchen that converts into a bar, a sitting room cinema, in-house golf and the possibility of taking a bath in 'a meadow'.
The project started off as a game: how to create a client's dream home in a modest duplex city apartment. The solution is based on three different surfaces or textures made of synthetic materials, which produce a series of idiosyncratic surprises within the limited space of the dwelling. A gilded surface rendered in vitreous tiles and gold leaf surrounds the shower, creating a spa that opens up to the outside and features the Madrid skyline as a backdrop. On the mezzanine floor, an artificial lawn covers the bedroom floor, transforming it into a miniature meadow high above the city. One of the most impressive features is a white, ten-metre-long imitation leather curtain that serves to organize the main living space, concealing or revealing a small office, the kitchen and a dressing room as required.
In the main space of the apartment, a white wall separating the public area from the private also hide the stringer supporting the treads of a metal staircase encased in white-painted, wooden box sections, resulting in a sculpture-like structure.
The final result is a bijou apartment, an exercise in sensitivity and elegance. Three different synthetic textiles – green grass, gold tiles and white leather – alternate between vertical and horizontal planes and transform the spaces according to their required usage at a given point in time.
