SCHOONLOO (NL) - However nature-friendly camping may seem, its sustainability credentials are pretty disappointing in practice. FARO Architects were recently commissioned by the Dutch forestry commission to design several recyclable and CO2-neutral campsite buildings. The pilot project combined seven design principles: natural, functional, comfortable, serviceable, sustainable, distinctive and surprising.
The focus of the sustainability strategy is on the hot water supply and heating. By deploying solar water heaters, water-saving taps and shower heads, materials like composites combined with fibres (flax, hemp, coconut, jute, synthetic resin), energy-efficient LED lighting and locally-sourced facade cladding like larch wood and tree trunks, the environmental impact of the buildings is up to 50% lower than that of conventional buildings. The ambition is to make the buildings (reception and meeting buildings, private and communal washrooms) fully recyclable and CO2-neutral. In the coming years, 40 camp sites will be redeveloped on the model of this pilot project.
