NETHERLANDS - All about looking for the magic and a string of gems.

The smaller design projects, like objects and gardens, were the real 'gems', recalls Anouk Vogel of her earliest work experiences with big firms. She studied landscape architecture at the Metropolitan University of Manchester, and through a student exchange ended up at Wageningen and on a work placement with West 8 in the Netherlands. In 2007, after a few years of working for various firms like the aforementioned West 8, Bureau B+B and Inside/Outside, she set up her own landscape architecture practice in Amsterdam.

Thanks to this experience, Anouk Vogel's work is actually a string of 'gems'. It spans gardens, temporary installations, buildings, interiors and street furniture. In February of this year she won the competition to design furniture for Amsterdam’s most famous city park, the Vondelpark, with a proposal in which the sturdy, cast-iron park furniture is decorated with ornaments inspired by the park's flora and fauna. It is obvious that Vogel is someone with an eye for detail; some of the lampposts are topped by a cast iron songbird that only the most observant passers-by will notice. Her designs for seating and a kiosk exhibit a signature that can best be described as both detailed and poetic, fragile and robust. Irrespective of the size of the project, Vogel is always 'looking for the magic', a legacy, she says, of West 8's methods and philosophy.
